On 4th and 5th May 2018, The HEAD Foundation held an ICT professional development workshop on TPACK in Solo, Indonesia.
The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) workshop was held in partnership with experts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Ewha Woman’s University (EWU), Korea and Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS).
This is the Foundation’s third such workshop in Indonesia and was facilitated by Dr Uma Natarajan (THF), Dr Chai Ching Sing (CUHK), Dr Hyo-Jeong So (EWA) and Dr Nur Arifah (UNS).
The workshop was based on the project, ‘Multimodal English Language Learning Using Mobile Phones in Indonesia Classrooms’. This project aims to address the limitations of current literacy and language learning practices in Indonesia that rely on didactic teaching and decontextualised language learning.
The forty Indonesian participants were in-service teachers. During the workshop, they were trained to design a series of adaptable lessons to engage students in gamified multimodal English learning that can be implemented using mobile phones. The participants had to design the lessons in a manner that would enhance their students’ English speaking and writing competencies. At the end of the workshop, the participants produced a TPACK designed lesson that they will use in their respective classrooms.
The participants were surveyed on their knowledge and beliefs about ICT and multimodal learning before and after the workshop.
“Certificates of Recognition” were awarded to the best three ICT lesson designs at the end of the workshop.
The inaugural TPACK workshop in 2016 was also held in Solo while 2017’s run of the TPACK workshop was held in Jakarta.
