ASEAN Foundation is an organisation from and for the people of Southeast Asia. Through various projects under the thematic areas of Education, Arts and Culture, Media, and Community Building, the ASEAN Foundation empowers ASEAN people to contribute to the building of the ASEAN Community.

The HEAD Foundation designed a blended capacity building programme to equip the 2019/20 ASEAN Science and Technology Fellows with effeective science communication and leadership skills for their one-year Fellowship.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) was conceived in the early 1960s as a financial institution that would be Asian in character and foster economic growth and cooperation in one of the poorest regions in the world. ADB assists its members, and partners, by providing loans, technical assistance, grants, and equity investments to promote social and economic development.

The HEAD Foundation, in partnership with ADB, organised a week-long online Professional Development Programme that delved into how educational systems can reshape school education to make it more robust and resilient in the face of disruptions like COVID-19.

The HEAD Foundation and ADB co-organised a Regional STEM Symposium in 2019 for policy makers, teacher trainers and leading experts in Asia to discuss the incorporating of STEM in the K-12 curriculum, and preparing teachers to be suitable STEM instructors.

ADB and The HEAD Foundation successfully conducted a week-long Professional Learning Programme for ADB’s Developing Member Countries in 2016 and 2017. The programme is designed to strengthen capacity among education specialists and policy makers to better implement education reform.

The HEAD Foundation also supported the pilot run of a training programme in Indonesia focusing on polytechnic leaders in the middle management level, an initiative under the Polytechnic Education Development Project (PEDP) by ADB, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (MORTHE) and Project Management Unit (PMU).

Ateneo de Manila University’s Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED) was established in 1997 to lead the University’s work with public schools in line with the mission to close the poverty gap and improve quality of life in the Philippines by improving public basic education in scale.

ACED was a partner of the second run of the Certificate of Educational Studies in Leadership programme which developed the leadership skills of 21 Filipino educational leaders and officials.

Enuma is a Silicon Valley education technology company that creates exceptional learning solutions that allow all children to gain confidence and independence while building foundational skills. Enuma’s notable products include the learning apps Todo Math and Todo English, which have seen over 8 million downloads worldwide,  as well as Kitkit School, which was named a co-winner of Elon Musk’s USD 15 million Global Learning XPRIZE competition in 2019. With offices in Berkeley, Seoul and Beijing, Enuma’s team of world-class designers, developers and educators are committed to making quality education accessible to all children, including those with special needs or without resources.  

The HEAD Foundation partners with Enuma in developing Sekolah Enuma, a version of the award-winning Kitkit School catering specifically to young learners in Indonesia. Find out more about the project here:  

The University of Education was established as a faculty of the University of Hue in 1957. It became an official affiliated member of Hue University in 1994. With more than 60 years of establishment and development, University of Education, Hue University has become a prestigious teacher training and research centre in Central Vietnam, Western Highlands as well as the whole country.

The HEAD Foundation is partnering with the University of Education, Hue University, to share strategies and actionable tips on navigating COVID-19 schooling crisis. Mr Tuan A. Hoang is translating the Foundation’s Making HEADway handbooks into Vietnamese to reach educators in the country.

Mayo Clinic is an American non-profit organisation committed to clinical practice, education and research. In 2020, Newsweek and US World and News Report recognised Mayo Clinic as the best hospital in the US and the world respectively. Particularly, its five specialties Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology & Gastroenterologic Surgery, Ear, Nose & Throat, Nephrology, and Urology were ranked No. 1 in the country. Based in Rochester, Minnesota, Mayo Clinic has close to 20 hospitals in the US and treats more than one million patients annually from all 50 states locally and nearly 140 countries worldwide.  

The HEAD Foundation is currently supporting multi-centre clinical research on the efficacy of Tuina in managing chronic lower back pain, involving medical experts from Mayo Clinic, the Singapore General Hospital  and the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University in China.  

Dr Brent Bauer, Director of the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic, also participated in the Foundation’s Webinar Series “COVID-19 What Next…?” as an esteemed panellist. 

meriSTEM@NIE Singapore is a multi-centric education, research and industry centre with the to enhance the quality of STEM literacy in Singapore through cross-disciplinary partnerships in research, teaching, and outreach so that future generations of educators, learners, and citizens are able to harness relevant STEM knowledge and skills in addressing current and emerging challenges for self and others.

At the Foundation’s inaugural Regional STEM Symposium 2019 co-organised with ADB, founding members of meriSTEM@NIE shared their expertise on constructing a comprehensive STEM curriculum and teaching framework with seven developing Asian countries.

The National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore, is Singapore’s national teacher education institute and an integral part of the nation’s education service. As an institute within a world-class research university, they play a key role in the preparation of teachers and in the provision of teacher professional and school leadership development programmes.

The HEAD Foundation, together with experts from the National Institute of Education (Singapore), Ewha Womans University (Korea) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, has designed and delivered a series of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) workshops in Indonesia at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) and Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS).

The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) was established by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) in 1966 to respond to the needs of inclusive and sustainable agriculture and rural development.

SEARCA and The HEAD Foundation co-organised a leadership development programme that is designed as a capacity building workshop for administrators, middle and senior managers, and academic leaders of HEIs in Southeast Asia.

SECG (Singapore  is a Singapore-based group of highly experienced education policy-makers, practitioners and trainers who between them cover the whole spectrum from early-childhood education, primary, secondary, tertiary and TVET, and have international consulting experience. In particular, SECG has worked in Asia and the Middle East in education reform, teacher preparation and professional development.

SECG has worked with The HEAD Foundation in the design of the following programmes:

The Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is the first and largest hospital in Singapore. With five National Specialist Centres co-located on its campus, SGH prides itself in its high quality multi-disciplinary approach to treatment and research to bring holistic care to its patients.Amongst the many accolades it receives, SGH is the largest teaching hospital in Asia to have achieved Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation in 2005, and was also the first in Asia to achieve the Magnet Recognition in 2010 for nursing excellence awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Every year, the SGH Campus caters to over one million patients.

The First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University is part of Jinan University, a public research university based in Guangzhou, China. The Hospital is an AAA public general hospital that focuses on medical treatment and training, scientific research and rehabilitation services. Amongst others, the Hospital is recognised as the highest AAA credit grade hospital among Guangzhou’s social security-designated medical institutes and a National Excellent Hospital of High Quality Nursing Care Service. From 2010 to 2014, the Hospital was ranked one of the Top 10 Hospitals in Guangzhou in the China Health Annual Review.

The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans to countries of the world for capital projects. It comprises two institutions: The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the International Development Association. The World Bank is a component of the World Bank Group.

The World Bank and The HEAD Foundation designed a professional learning programme on enhancing Indonesian teacher education. It is specifically for Mathematics and Science teacher trainers and will critically examine current arrangements in the delivery and effectiveness of Professional Pedagogical Training Programme for teachers (Pendidikan Profesi Guru, PPG).

The University of Nottingham is a public research university in England. It is a pioneering university that provides an exceptional research-led education (TEF Gold), and an outstanding student experience.

The HEAD Foundation and the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Research in Educational Leadership and Management are working together to address the relevant issues and challenges in educational leadership in Southeast Asia. The TransformLEAD@21 programme is the collaborative partnership between these two key principal partners. This pilot project represented in this initiative is the Certificate in Education Studies in Leadership (CESL).

The HEAD Foundation supported Professor Tony Bush from the University of Nottingham on his research on the implementation of educational policy reform in Malaysia.

The ASEAN Focus Group (AFG Venture Group) is an Asia and Australia based corporate advisory and consulting firm with over 25 years’ experience in creating alliances, relationships and transactions in Australia, South East Asia and India. AFG Venture Group is acknowledged as a principle partner in the delivery of inaugural ASEAN Australia Education Dialogue.

The Dialogue connected key education and training stakeholders as well as business planners and thought leaders from Australia and ASEAN. It reflects the ASEAN-Australian commitment to a long-term education partnership informed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030.

In 2019, The HEAD Foundation supported the panel discussion on “Strengthening Quality Assurance and Developing Global Standards in ELT Centre Management in ASEAN and Australia”.

Arus is a social enterprise that provides after-school classes where students actively solve problems by building and creating their own physical and digital solutions. Our aim is to make learning relevant to our students and instill in them the love of learning. The HEAD Foundation offered a grant to Arus to support its initiatives in STEM education. Partnership with THF.

The Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) at Boston College promotes the belief that an international perspective is needed to foster enlightened policies and practices in higher education. With this mission, CIHE was founded in 1995 to advance knowledge about the complex realities of higher education in the contemporary world through its research, publications, training programs, and advisory activities.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was inked between The HEAD Foundation and CIHE in January 2016. Both parties are collaborating on a newsletter entitled “Higher Education in Southeast Asia and Beyond” (HESB) to fill a gap in periodicals in the field of higher education research in Southeast Asia.

The DBS-NUS Social Venture Challenge Asia is an Asia-wide competition for social enterprises, open to any member of the public. Organised by NUS Enterprise and DBS Foundation, the Challenge aims to identify and support innovative new ideas and existing social ventures that have the potential to generate positive, scalable and sustainable social impact.

The HEAD Foundation proudly supported SVCA in 2017 and 2018, sponsoring the Education sectoral cash prize of S$20,000. THF also collaborated with NUS Enterprise and DBS Foundation to publish a special issue of THink, featuring winners that emerged from the Challenge.

Dementia Singapore was formed in 1990 as the ‘Alzheimer’s Disease Association’ to better serve Singapore’s growing dementia community, increase awareness about dementia, and reduce the stigma surrounding the condition.

As Singapore’s leading Social Service Agency (SSA) in specialised dementia care, Dementia Singapore aims to advocate for the needs of people living with dementia and their families; empower the community through capability-building, knowledge and consultancy; and deliver quality, person-centred care innovations.

Dementia Singapore is registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee (UEN No. 202111519K), listed as a Charity and is recognised as an Institution of a Public Character (IPC).

Graduate School of Education is a professional school with a social mission to create and apply knowledge informed by research on human development, educational policy, teaching and information science. Students are involved in dynamic, collaborative and transformative research that impacts our local, national and global communities to transform society through education.

The HEAD Foundation, in partnership with the International Comparative Higher Education Finance and Accessibility Project (ICHEFA) of the Graduate School of Education at the State University of New York at Buffalo, produced the Higher Education Finance and Accessibility in Southeast Asia website.

IPPTN was established by the Malaysian National Council on Higher Education in 1997 and promoted as a Centre of Excellence of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) since 2016. They are a research institute which conducts relevant policy-oriented studies in the field of higher education to assist in the development of higher education to advance research, teaching and publication in higher education institutions.

The HEAD Foundation supported, and participated in the 6th Global Higher Education Forum 2018 (GHEF 6.0) held from 8 to 10 October 2018 in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The three-day event was organised by the Ministry of Education, Malaysia and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) was founded as a research university serving as both an educational park and industrial park. KMUTT currently produces qualified graduates and skillful human resources with strong quality and morality ground. The university actively involves in research and development as well as provides quality academic services contributing to enhancement of economy and quality of life.

KMUTT hosted inaugural Regional STEM Symposium co-organised by ADB and The HEAD Foundation in 2019 for 7 developing Asian countries.

KnowledgeDOT is a Singapore-based organisation set up by Valerie Siew and Amarjeet Kaur, former staff of Singapore’s National Library Board, to build capacity of librarians of the Myanmar public and school libraries.

The HEAD Foundation partnered with KnowledgeDOT in 2018 to support literacy among children, including out-of-school children, in Myanmar. The project developed the capacity of librarians to develop and run children programmes and services that instil early literacy skills.

Founded in 2011, Learn Education’s mission is to innovate learning platforms by leveraging technology to provide quality education. Their platform helps teachers to equip students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to become self-learners and responsible critical thinkers.

Their solution has proven to increase student motivation and engagement, helping over 100 schools achieve higher academic performance in 2016.

The HEAD Foundation supported Dr Paul Apivat Hanvongse from Learn Education in 2017 to test a fully integrated, blended-learning English language solution in Thailand.

MIT’s Leadership Center is dedicated to the study and practice of modern leadership. Since 2005, the MIT Leadership Center has served as a platform to reframe the conventional definition of leadership. By offering access to cutting-edge research, education, and dynamic conversations, they strengthen the capacity of individuals, teams and organisations to develop innovative solutions to complex problems and develop the next generation of leaders worldwide.

NIE International is the consultancy and training private arm of the National Institute of Education (NIE) Singapore. They offer NIE’s expertise and knowledge, accrued over 50 years of pedagogy teaching and research, in niche areas comprising of teacher training courses, school management training and educational leadership programmes.

With NIEI’s expertise in incorporating STEM into teacher development, The HEAD Foundation and ADB organised the inaugural Regional STEM Symposium 2019 for seven developing Asian countries.

Science Centre Singapore, a non-formal educational institution and leading regional Science Centre, along with its group of attractions, brings out the wonders of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through its unique blend of exhibitions, educational programmes and events. A custodian of creativity and innovation, Science Centre Singapore has captured the evolution of scientific developments for nearly four decades.

At the Foundation’s inaugural Regional STEM Symposium 2019 co-organised with ADB, Science Centre shared Singapore’s story in incorporating STEM in the K-12 curriculum with seven developing Asian countries.

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) is a regional intergovernmental organisation established in 1965 among governments of Southeast Asian countries to promote regional cooperation in education, science and culture in the region. As an organisation that has continued to nurture human capacities and explored the peoples’ fullest potential, the SEAMEO maintains its work and aspirations for development with peoples of the region to make lives better through quality and equity in education, preventive health education, culture and tradition, information and communication technology, languages, poverty alleviation and agriculture and natural resources.

Vietnam hosts the SEAMEO Regional Training Center (SEAMEO RETRAC) in Ho Chi Minh City, as one of the 15 SEAMEO Centers in Southeast Asia. In February 1999, the SEAMEO Council approved the Center’s adoption of educational management as its core specialisation.

The HEAD Foundation supported the International Conference 2018 on Leadership and Management in Higher Education in a Globalised World: Innovations and Best Practices, organised by SEAMEO RETRAC.

SEAMEO RIHED is the South-East Asian Ministers of Education Organization Centre specialising in higher education development. Hosted by the Thai Government, its main activities include training, research, and information dissemination with special focus on efficiency and effectiveness of higher education in SEAMEO Member Countries.

The Foundation supported the keynote speech on ‘Digitalisation, Employability and Lifelong Learning’ at the SEAMEO RIHED SEA-HiEd Inter-Regional Research Symposium in November 2019.

The Singapore University of Technology and Design is established as an autonomous university to advance knowledge and nurture technically-grounded leaders and innovators to serve societal needs,

with a focus on Design, through an integrated multi-disciplinary curriculum and multidisciplinary research.

The HEAD Foundation proudly supported the 24-hour hackathon What The Hack 2017 organised by SUTD, as the Platinum Sponsor and was a part of the judging panel.

The mission of the Society of Floating Solutions (Singapore) is to facilitate the application of scientific principles and proven offshore technologies to the design, engineering and construction of floating space solutions to enhance the quality of human life and address issues of contemporary environmental issues in ways that are eco-friendly and sustainable.

The Foundation supported the Society of Floating Solutions (Singapore)’s Inaugural World Conference on Floating Solutions in April 2019. Experts from around the globe presented on and discussed on ocean space utilisation.

State University of Jakarta (UNJ) is a public university in Jakarta, Indonesia. Founded in 1964 as the Jakarta Institute of Teaching and Education, it was later converted into a state university by the Indonesian government in 1999.

The HEAD Foundation organised the Professional Learning Programme on “Improving Schooling Outcomes: Developing Teacher and Teaching Capacities for School Improvement in Indonesia” at UNJ.

THF and the University of Queensland (Australia) also piloted the Certificate in Educational Studies in Leadership (CESL) programme at UNJ in 2018.

The Education University of Hong Kong is a publicly funded tertiary institution dedicated to the advancement of teaching and learning, through a diverse offering of academic and research programmes on teacher education and complementary social sciences and humanities disciplines.

In 2017, The HEAD Foundation provided a grant to Prof Lim Cher Ping from the Education University of Hong Kong to build the capacities of Cambodian universities for blended learning to enhance the quality and efficiency of education.

The International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI) brings together a growing community of researchers, educators and policy-makers every year to discuss and debate ideas, evidence, practices and strategies that help make schools and other educational institutions more effective for all those that they serve. ICSEI also offers opportunities to participate in active ongoing networks of professional interest, publications and website communication such as the ICSEI Digest and ICSEI Express.

The HEAD Foundation supported and participated in the ICSEI 2018 conference from 8 to 12 January 2018 in Singapore.

The School of Global Studies is an innovative academic initiative within Thammasat University and a front runner in global health and social innovation within Thailand, Southeast Asia and beyond. It has a track record of excellent research on determinants of the public’s health, student-centred teaching, and academic service relevant to community needs.

The HEAD Foundation and SGS joined hands through a grant agreement in 2017, for the latter to establish a case centre for social issues.

The University of the Philippines System is a state university system in the Philippines, and is the country’s national university. The University of the Philippines (UP) has eight constituent universities and one autonomous college spread throughout 17 campuses in the archipelago.

The HEAD Foundation worked with UP to develop and track the impact of LAC sessions guides that will aid Grade 6 Science Teachers in conducting localised LAC sessions.

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) is one of the outstanding universities in Indonesia. UNS has been recognised as one of the best universities in Asia and has been becoming a new point of interest of scholars and students from around the globe. UNS has also been ranked as the third best universities in Indonesia by the National Accreditation Bodies for Higher Education Institutions.

It is a Research Intensive University recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia in 2007and the first university in Malaysia to be selected by the government to participate in the Accelerated Programme for Excellence, a fast-track programme that helps tertiary institutions achieve world-class status in 2008.

The HEAD Foundation supported and participated in the 6th Global Higher Education Forum 2018 (GHEF 6.0) organised by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Ministry of Education, Malaysia, and held in October 2018 in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) is a not-for-profit private university providing affordable quality education in Malaysia. Guided by its vision to be a global university of educational excellence, UTAR is highly reputed as one of the fastest growing private higher education institutions in the country and a comprehensive University with dedication to achieving excellence in teaching and research.

The HEAD Foundation provided a research grant in 2017 to UTAR to study the skills gap in four Southeast Asia countries in light of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and the rising importance of STEM education.

Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world. They are a public research university in Scotland and are one of the top 100 of the world’s universities and have been named Scottish University of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.

The Education Renovation in Vietnam and the Asian Region conference was organised by a team of partners which includes The HEAD Foundation, University of Glasgow (UoG), the British Council, Vietnam, Vietnam National University (VNU), Education and Vietnam Institute of Educational Science (VNIES).

The University of Queensland (UQ) is a public research university in Australia. It is Australia’s fifth oldest university and one of Australia’s leading research and teaching institutions and ranks among the world’s top universities. They strive for excellence through the creation, preservation, transfer and application of knowledge.

The HEAD Foundation and the University of Queensland’s School of Education worked together to address the relevant issues and challenges in educational leadership in Southeast Asia. The Educational Leaders for the 21st Century is the collaborative partnership between these two key principal partners. This pilot project represented in this initiative is the Certificate in Educational Studies in Leadership (CESL).
