Making HEADway
Becoming Leaders in Sustainability Education
As we enter a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has gained traction as a means to prepare future-ready graduates. But what is ESD?
Imparting innovative science-based knowledge is merely one part of the equation. Robust sustainability education should go beyond vocational training and equip students with a holistic understanding of complex and interconnected problems, and the soft skills and leadership to enact change.
Despite a general consensus on the necessity for a robust ESD curriculum, many teachers feel ill-equipped to teach about sustainability either as a standalone subject, or through infusing it into other subject curricular.
In the sixth Making HEADway series Becoming Leaders in Sustainability Education, we showcase the groundbreaking efforts of 25 educators from eight Asian countries in integrating ESD into their classrooms in a comprehensive handbook for educators. The two-part webinar held on 24 & 25 August 2023 features six selected contributors from the publication sharing more about crafting lessons that:
- Form curricula for sustainable development
- Use pedagogies that support learning about sustainable development
- Enable students to take action for sustainable development
The webinar was moderated by series consultant and editor Dr Tricia Seow, co-chair of the Sustainability Learning Lab at the National Institute of Education, Singapore.
