In the third instalment of the five-part series “The Art, Science and Good News of Ageing” on 16 November, Prof Wong Poh Kam, Emeritus Professor at NUS Business School, Lee Foong Ming, Manager (Programme & Volunteer Management) at Society for WINGS, and moderator CD Liang, Director for Development at The HEAD Foundation discussed how we can live a more fulfilled life by getting ourselves and our family better prepared for the realities of ageing.

Compared to physical ageing and psychological ageing, social ageing is most influenced by the perception of ageing in one’s culture. It can lead to social frailty if social needs that come with ageing are not properly fulfilled. Foong Ming feels that a positive view of ageing can lead to a positive social ageing experience and vice versa. She encouraged the audience to have sincere conversations with our elderly loved ones about their preferences of care in a non-judgmental way, and help them to stay socially engaged.

Many of the fears surrounding death or dying are related to medical costs, being a burden to loved ones and the well-being of family members after one’s final departure. To minimise such fears and truly enjoy life with peace of mind, Prof Wong encouraged everyone to plan ahead for such matters as we age, together with our loved ones and our caretakers. Increasingly, there are technology tools that make the planning process easier. Prof Wong shared some examples of these digital planning tools and explained how they can help us to live well and leave well.
