The NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions and The HEAD Foundation held the second webinar of their joint series, “In the Wake of a Changing Climate” on 13 July 2021. The webinar, titled “Water Security and Solutions”, featured three leading scientists and experts in the field of water security and water management – Dr. Peter Gleick, President Emeritus of the Pacific Institute; Dr. Cecilia Tortajada from the University of Glasgow School of Interdisciplinary Studies; and Prof. Khoo Teng Chye from the NUS School of Design and Environment. The panellists discussed water security issues of the water-energy-food nexus in Southeast Asia, how climate change affects it, and the various current and potential risks and solutions. This session was hosted and moderated by Assistant Professor He Xiaogang from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NUS.

With climate change intensifying its impact on the hydrological cycle in the vulnerable Southeast Asian region, we are facing both a climate crisis and a water crisis. A transition to freshwater sustainability requires effective water governance and a set of innovative water solutions. During the webinar, the panellists discussed what ‘soft path’ water solutions are, how effective water governance plays an important role in supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation, and how cities have the responsibility and means to ensure long term water sustainability.

The webinar presented many thought-provoking details and insightful exchanges among the panellists. We invite you to watch the full recording of the webinar to learn more.

The HEAD Foundation and NUS CNCS sincerely thank the webinar panellists and attendees from 23 countries, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, China, HK, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, UK, US and Singapore, for your support and participation.

*This series is jointly organised with the NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions.
