Leadership Development Program for Higher Education Institutions in Southeast Asia

The HEAD Foundation, in partnership with the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study in Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), conducted the inaugural Leadership Development Program for Higher Education Institutions in Southeast Asia at the University of Philippines, Los Baños in January 2019.

 

19 participants from five Southeast Asian countries; Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, attended the 5-day programme. The programme was conceived and designed by the Foundation in partnership with Dr N Varaprasad, the Programmme Director and former vice-president of the National University of Singapore, to build the capacity of higher education leaders in the context of contemporary local and regional challenges.

Over the five days, Dr N Varaprasad (Former Vice President of NUS), Prof Ashok Kapoor, Prof Paul Teng (National Institute of Education International), Dr Calvin Chan (Singapore University of Social Sciences) and Dr Rebekah Lim (Singapore University of Social Sciences) covered the following topics:

  1. Analysis of external factors and positioning of HEIs including challenges, issues, and opportunities
  2. Understanding and capitalising on one’s strengths
  3. Values and ethics in change leadership
  4. Strategic management
  5. Design thinking
  6. Human capital development in HEIs
  7. Disruptive technologies in teaching and learning
  8. Quality assurance in teaching and learning
  9. ASEAN mutual recognition framework
  10. Transitioning from management to leadership

At the end of the workshop, the participants were able to articulate on the current challenges facing Southeast Asian HEIs, discuss present-day principles and best practices in leadership and management in higher education, analyse contemporary issues and problems in higher education leadership and management; and propose strategic actions to address the current challenges and to take advantage of present opportunities facing their respective HEIs in particular and higher education in Southeast Asia in general.

Mr Ho Swee Huat

Mr Ho Swee Huat is the Founder and Managing Director of Abacus Assets Advisors Pte Ltd. Before starting the company, he had an established career in the banking industry, with 20 years of experience in Singapore, Hong Kong and New York.

He was an Independent Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee of CapitaCommercial Trust Management LTD from 2004 to 2013.

He is the current Chairman of Autism Association (Singapore) which he co-founded with a group of parents in 1992. He is also Vice-Chairman of Eden School, a special school for children with autism.

Mr Ho holds a Master’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a Liberal Arts degree in Economics from Hamilton College, USA.

He has been a member of the Board of the Foundation since its incorporation.
