Using principles of gamification, Getting to Zero is a physical card game conceptualised for secondary school Geography students in Singapore, to teach students about Singapore’s climate policy options.
The purpose behind the game is to help students understand the complexities and trade-offs in selecting climate policies to reduce carbon emissions in a fun and engaging manner.
On 27 October and 3 November 2023, lead trainer Tricia Seow, Co-chair of the Sustainability Learning Lab at the National Institute of Education, Singapore, and the game creators from NIE Singapore, Ng Wen Xin, Geography Teacher at Assumption English School, and Melissa Low, Research Fellow at the Centre for Nature Based Climate Solutions, National University of Singapore, ran two online workshops for 49 educators from seven countries for adaptation of the game to Asian classrooms.
At the end of the session, participants:
- Learnt more about the global carbon-constrained context and how different countries are responding to it.
- Understood the different climate policy options and the potential advantages and trade-offs involved in the implementation of these options on a national/institutional scale.
- Experienced inquiry-based learning through a game format and supporting discussion and reflection activities.
