ICT in Education, Innovations and Education Technologies in the Digital Economy

In a report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released in 2015 that examined the impact of school technology on international test results, it was found that education systems which have invested heavily in information and communications technology (ICT) have seen “no noticeable improvement” in PISA test results for reading, mathematics or science. Will the OECD findings signal a push back or turnaround on the adoption of technology in the classrooms? Against the backdrop of new emerging technologies like Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Immersive Media, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has introduced infocomm media ideas and innovations in the K-12 education landscape and the Continuing Education and Training (CET) space with the underlying principle that ICT can be an enabler to achieve quality learning outcomes and make education work efficiently and effectively for the needs of the 21st Century. Are we overselling the whole idea that education technology is de rigueur for any school that does not want to be branded as twentieth century? As Singapore transforms into a Smart Nation, can we defend technology on the grounds that it will keep our students competitive in a digital and global economy defined by innovation and disruption?

Adrian is Director of the Education Sector (Sectoral Innovation Group) at the Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA). He leads a dynamic team to work with technology partners to develop innovative ideas and applications in K-12 schools and the continuing education and training sector to enhance learning and teaching and build deep skills in the 21st century. Adrian was formerly a Principal of a Future School (Ngee Ann Secondary School). The school was also a Microsoft Pathfinder, Mentor and World Tour School. He was an Honoree Winner (Academic Leadership Category) in the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) World Award in 2011 and an Expert Panel member of the US-based New Media Consortium Horizon Report: K-12 Edition.
